Specialized High school Audition prep
One of Art House’s specialties is preparing 7th and 8th graders for their high school performing arts auditions and/or their visual arts portfolio .
Whether you're auditioning for acting, musical theatre, or vocal performance programs, our experienced instructors provide personalized, one-on-one coaching tailored to your goals. Together, you'll select and refine audition material, strengthen your performance skills, and gain a clear understanding of what audition panels are looking for. Beyond preparing for high school admissions, the skills students develop confidence, stage presence, technique, and storytelling, and continue to benefit them throughout their performing arts journey, from school productions to future auditions.
To compliment private coaching, we strongly recommend enrolling in our High School Prep Group Class. This class is an essential part of the audition process, helping students connect their voice, body, and imagination into one expressive instrument. Through focused vocal training, movement exercises, and ensemble work, students build confidence, develop authentic emotional connection, and learn how to bring truth and energy to every performance. The collaborative class environment also gives students valuable experience performing in front of other s and receiving constructive feedback—an important part of preparing for real auditions.
Together, our private coaching and group training provide students with the skills, confidence, and experience they need to walk into auditions feeling prepared and ready to succeed.
In addition to private instruction, the package for performing arts students includes a filming session where their audition is recorded by their teacher(s). Teachers prepare the theater with professional lighting and a black background on the stage, and students receive an hour of guided recordings. All takes are sent to families who choose their favorites to be edited by their teacher.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Ideally, students should be taking private lessons or art instruction by their 7th grade year. It’s a good idea to continue lessons over the summer, so that progress is not lost and your child and their instructor can hit the ground running in September with songs/monologues/pieces chosen. However, if you decide to apply to an arts program later than that, you should absolutely start this process as soon as possible.
-
The DOE website is a great resource here. It lists the schools that offer your child’s chosen programs, and exactly what is required for their auditions.
MySchools also has information about the application process here
Our instructors are also very knowledgeable about the different schools and programs. If you know any students who go to these schools, their opinion is very valuable.
You are highly encouraged to attend the open houses that these schools offer; you may attend even if your child is not in 8th grade yet. We’ve had a number of students whose first choices changed upon visiting the schools themselves.
-
Your child should memorize their OSIS number, especially if they plan to make a video audition, as they must recite it in the video as part of their introduction.
Performing arts students should know the name of their audition piece, and the name of the composer or playwright. If they are playing a character, they should know the character’s name. Students should also be prepared to talk about why they chose a certain piece, and why they want to study voice/acting/art/dance/etc. The earlier they can prepare this, the more smoothly their recording session will go.
